3M Adflo battery won't charge after a long break – what happened?
Axis Baterie · Updated:
If your 3M Adflo battery sat uncharged for several months, for example over winter, its cells may have discharged below a safe voltage. The BMS electronics then lock the battery, and the 3M charger signals an error and won't start charging. You don't need to buy a new battery: during regeneration we replace the cells and unlock the BMS.
Why the battery “goes to sleep”
Every lithium-ion battery slowly loses charge, even when it is not in use. If the battery was put away partly discharged and left for several months, the cell voltage drops below the threshold the electronics consider safe. The BMS (battery management system) then switches to protection mode and blocks charging – it is a safety feature, not a charger fault.
Typical symptoms
- The 3M charger shows a red light or flashes an error as soon as the battery is inserted.
- The battery doesn't respond, even though it worked before the break.
- Other batteries charge normally on the same charger.
What you can check yourself
- Clean the battery and charger contacts with a dry cloth.
- Test the charger with another, working battery.
- Leave the battery in the charger for a few minutes – a deeply discharged pack sometimes needs a moment before charging starts.
If that doesn't help, the problem is inside the battery.
What not to do
Don't try to “revive” the battery with makeshift methods, such as connecting it to a power supply or a different charger. Deeply discharged lithium cells charged without proper control can overheat. It is safer to send the battery in for diagnosis.
What we do during regeneration
First we diagnose the battery free of charge: we measure the cells and check the BMS. Then we replace all cells with new ones and unlock the dormant BMS while fitting the new pack. The battery works with the original 3M charger again and comes with a 12-month warranty. If the electronics themselves turn out to be damaged, we will contact you before starting any work.
We regenerate 10.8 V Li-ion batteries: 837640 (Standard) and 837631 (Heavy Duty). See prices in our article how much 3M Adflo battery regeneration costs.
How to avoid the problem in future
- Before a long break, charge the battery to roughly half.
- Store it in a dry place at room temperature, not in an unheated workshop.
- Top up the charge every few months, even if you are not using it.
FAQ
- The 3M charger shows a red light – what does it mean?
- Most often the charger is signalling a battery problem: a BMS lockout after deep discharge or worn-out cells. Diagnosis will pinpoint the exact cause.
- Can a deeply discharged Adflo battery be saved?
- Usually, yes. We replace the cells and unlock the BMS, while the housing and electronics stay original.
- Do you regenerate older NiMH batteries?
- We regenerate 10.8 V Li-ion batteries 837640 and 837631. If you have a different battery, contact us before shipping.
